Local Food

So what does the term “Local food” actually mean? There really is no accepted definition of “local.” Depending on which source is quoted, the term can mean food grown or produced anywhere from next door…to 100 miles away from the consumer…to any point within a given state. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (USDA ERS) defines local and regional food systems as, “…place-specific clusters of agricultural producers of all kinds—farmers, ranchers, fishers—along with consumers and institutions engaged in producing, processing, distributing, and selling foods.”

UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County is dedicated to providing consumers and community members with science-based information about local foods…including definitions, benefits, challenges, and trends…to prompt conversation, and to help us to make informed decisions about our diets and food dollars. test.
