Health, Wellness & Exercise

Physical inactivity can lead to many health problems such as obesity which is known to cause many chronic diseases. The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines state that adults aged 18-64 years should do 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate intensity exercise weekly or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. Children and adolescents age 6 to 17 years should do 1 hour or more of physical activity daily. Adults and children should also aim for muscle strengthening exercises 2-3 times per week using all major muscle groups including legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms. Older Adults aged 65 years and over should do the same as adults with the addition of exercises to maintain or improve balance if they are at risk for falling. Programs will be designed to motivate and support healthy lifestyles among residents, on the importance of increasing physical activity to lower short and long term health risks.
