Brevard Discovery Garden

The Brevard Discovery Garden's (BDG) mission is to promote an increased appreciation of our Central Florida environment. The Garden seeks to inspire, support, and educate the community about environmentally friendly horticulture through UF/IFAS research-based demonstrations, collections, and displays.

The BDG is being developed by Master Gardener Volunteers using a combination of Native, Keystone, and Florida Friendly plants. BDG’s goal is to provide the local community with an educational venue to show residents “firsthand” how to use sustainable horticultural practices that support a healthy environment. The Brevard Discovery Garden is a 100% volunteer organization. As such, we rely on donations and fundraiser events to underwrite our mission.

Brevard Discovery Garden is comprised of two key departments: BDG Nursery and BDG Demonstration Garden.

Brevard Discovery Garden Nursery

The Brevard Discovery Garden Nursery (BDG Nursery) propagates plants which are marketed at semi-annual plant sales providing residents with a much-needed local source for FL Native, Keystone, and FL Friendly Plants to use in their landscape. Nursery volunteers propagate plants from seeds, cuttings, and plant division. In addition, the Nursery grows a diverse collection of seasonal herbs & vegetables in the Greenhouse which are ready to be planted in your garden or container in the Spring or Fall. You’ll also find a wide range of succulents in the BDG Nursery, often planted in decorative containers, making a perfect gift or patio accent plant.

Brevard Discovery Garden Demonstration Garden

The Brevard Discovery Garden Demonstration Garden (BDG Demonstration Garden) currently has 9 different garden areas designed to show local residents how to incorporate native and Florida Friendly plants into their landscape using recommended horticultural practices. The current garden areas include a Pollinator Garden, Herb Garden, Rain/Swale Garden, Bromeliad Garden, Orchard, Florida Native Garden, Coastal Garden, Raised Vegetable Garden, and the Royal Poinciana Shade Garden.

Garden Discovery Days

The demonstration gardens are open to the public for self-guided tours from 9 am - 11 am on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, October through May. Brevard Discovery Garden Volunteers will be actively working in the Garden on Discovery Days and will be available to answer your gardening questions.

Volunteering

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the Brevard Discovery Garden (BDG), call the Brevard Extension Office at (321) 633-1702.  You don’t need any special training to volunteer – just a willingness to “play in the dirt.” As a volunteer, you will receive valuable “on-the-job” guidance from an experienced Master Gardener. Becoming a BDG Volunteer is a great way to give back to your community!

The Brevard Discovery Garden is adjacent to the UF/IFAS Brevard Extension Office at 3695 Lake Dr, Cocoa, FL 32926. For the most up-to-date information on the Brevard Discovery Garden, check out our Facebook page at Facebook.Com/BrevardDiscoveryGarden.
