Agriculture in Columbia County
Agriculture is a cornerstone of Columbia County’s economy and rural heritage. The region’s diverse mix of sandy upland soils and well-drained flatwoods supports a wide variety of crops, from traditional row crops like peanuts, corn, and soybeans to pasture and hay for cattle production. In recent years, there has been growing interest in specialty crops such as vegetables, blueberries, and watermelons, reflecting both Florida’s expanding local food movement and the adaptability of Columbia County’s farmers. With a mix of multi-generation family farms and new landowners entering agriculture, the county’s producers continue to demonstrate resilience and innovation in the face of challenges such as fluctuating markets, weather extremes, and rising input costs.

Row Crop and Commercial Horticulture Program
The UF/IFAS Extension Row Crops and Commercial Horticulture program supports both established producers and new growers through research-based education, on-farm demonstrations, and individualized technical assistance. The program helps farmers improve soil health, manage pests sustainably, and adopt precision agriculture technologies that enhance profitability and environmental stewardship. It also provides support for small farms and specialty crop growers, helping them access new markets, improve crop quality, and build resilience against climate and pest pressures. Through workshops, field days, and one-on-one farm visits, the program works to strengthen Columbia County’s agricultural community and promote a productive, sustainable future for local agriculture.
