Help Desk

Master Gardener Volunteers are here to help you with your gardening and landscaping questions. You can talk to us by email, phone, or by visiting the Extension office.

Have you ever wondered:

  • What kind of bug is this? Why are there so many in my house at night?
  • Why is just one part of my hedge dying?

If you have, you’re in the right place! The Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV) Help Desk can help you find answers to all your gardening problems. We use science and expert research to make sure you get the best advice. Let us help you keep your plants healthy!

    Master Gardener Volunteers can help you with many different things related to plants, gardening, and your yard. Here are some of the services we have for you:

    • Florida-Friendly Landscaping Help: Learn how your yard can be more eco-friendly and maybe earn special recognition.

    • Figure Out Plant Problems: If your plant doesn’t look healthy, we’ll help find out why.

    • Plant Identification: Bring in a plant, and we’ll tell you what it is.

    • Find Out About Plant Diseases: We help figure out if your plant is sick and what disease it might have.

    • Choosing Native Plants: Get advice on which Florida plants are great for your yard.

    • Spotting Invasive Plants: We help you find and deal with plants that shouldn’t be in our environment.

    • Monthly Planting Tips: We can tell you which vegetables and flowers you should plant each month.

    • Weed Identification: Find out if that mystery plant in your yard is a weed.

    • Turf and Grass Problems: Get help if your lawn or grass isn’t growing the way it should.

    • Wildlife Identification: We help you figure out what animal or critter you’ve seen.

    • Recognizing Invasive Species: Learn how to spot and manage unwanted animals or bugs.

    • Insect Help: Bring us a bug, and we’ll help you identify it.

    • Termite Identification: We can tell if the insect you found is a termite.

    • Testing Soil pH: Find out if your soil is too acidic or too basic for your plants.

    • Watering Advice: Get tips on the best ways to water your plants and yard.

    • Help Growing Vegetables and Fruit Trees: Advice on how to plant and take care of food plants and trees.

    • Nutrition Tips: Learn what nutrients your plants might need to grow healthy.

    • How to Start a Butterfly Garden: Get advice on how to make a garden that attracts butterflies.

    • Community Gardens: Get help starting or joining a garden shared with people in your neighborhood.

    • School Gardens: We support gardening projects at schools.

  • Diagnostic Tests We Offer

    If you want to find out exactly what’s wrong with your plants, grass, or bugs, you can bring samples to our office or send them directly to the University of Florida for testing. These services are open to everyone:

    • UF/IFAS Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) Plant Clinic – $50
      This clinic helps find out what diseases or pests might be affecting your plants. You can find all the details, forms, and instructions here: TREC Plant Clinic Info
    • Gainesville Turf Disease Test – $75
      If your lawn has urgent problems, this test quickly finds out what’s wrong. Submission forms and details are here: Turf Disease Test
    • Gainesville Nematode Test – $37
      Nematodes are tiny worms that can harm plants. You can learn how to send a sample here: Nematode Test
    • Gainesville Plant Identification Test
      Not sure what plant you have? Send a sample with the submission form and instructions here: Plant ID Test
    • Gainesville Insect Identification Test – $15
      This test helps identify insects found in your yard or home. More info and forms are here: Insect ID Test
    You can contact these services directly to send samples or ask questions. The University of Florida has a network of labs that provide these reliable, science-based tests to help Florida residents with plant and pest problems.
