Commercial Horticulture Program

In urban Broward County, horticulture dominates commercial agricultural production. Nursery production, landscape installation, landscape maintenance, and arboriculture account for more than $200 million in annual sales. Hundreds of firms employ thousands of individuals, helping contribute to a strong Broward economy and a beautiful environment.

The commercial horticulture program provides educational classes, workshops, on-site testing, and diagnostic services to help these industries be environmentally friendly, successfully managed, and on the cutting edge of new technologies and issues.  The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) research-based knowledge informs our curriculum and recommendations.

Please contact Donna Torrey at donna.torrey@ufl.edu to sign up for our newsletter that goes out monthly and informs you of all upcoming classes and trainings.

  • Tree Trimmer Licensing Ordinance Training and Testing

The Tree Trimmer Program dates back to October 2000, when the County Commission passed an ordinance regulating the county’s tree-trimming industry and requiring individuals and businesses that trim trees for hire to obtain a license and to provide proof of training in the form of certifications earned through participation in a continuing-education course. The move reflected concerns at the time about the quality of tree trimming as practiced in the county and was designed to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

The Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance Certification (LCLM) is needed for all green industry workers who apply Glyphosate (Round-up) and other caution labeled pesticides to ornamental plant beds.

The Limited Lawn and Ornamental Applicator Certification (LLO) is designed for individuals and employees of private or governmental entities, and can apply RUPs.

Neither certification authorizes the operation of a pest control business.

UF/IFAS Broward Extension is now offering the LCLM/LLO training and testing.
