Commercial Horticulture and Pesticides
The Urban Horticulture Program in Sumter County is geared towards landscape professionals. Support is provided in the form of educational workshops and diagnostic services. Workshop topics include: lawns, ornamentals (annual, perennials, shrubs and trees), tree pruning, chain saw safety, Green Industries Best Management Practices (GI-BMP), fertilizers, and pesticides.
Best Management Practices Florida Green Industries Best Management Practices Certification (GI-BMP) is mandated by the State of Florida. All commercial applicators are required to obtain a fertilizer applicator’s license and become GI-BMP certified in order to apply fertilizers and to obtain or renew a local business tax certificate.
Pesticide Applicator Certification helps program participants obtain and maintain their pesticide licenses and includes exam preparation, administration and license retention with continuing education classes.
Careful lawn maintenance – including proper fertilization, pruning, mowing and irrigation – goes a long way, especially when done sustainable.
