Compost Happens Program

Attend a Compost Happens Workshop to learn how to turn yard and kitchen waste into useful natural soil. You can use it as soil amendment, mulch, potting soil, or compost tea. The workshop costs $10 per household and includes a kitchen caddy, compost bin and thermometer for each participating household. Composting yard waste is a good way to reduce trash by reusing a helpful resource. This program is sponsored by Hillsborough County's Solid Waste Management Department and the Extension Service.

Please visit our Calendar of Events for the full list of gardening programs. Pre-registration is required.

Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting uses worms and helpful microbes to make rich compost from kitchen waste. One pound of worms can turn about 65 pounds of garbage into compost in about 110 days.

Finished compost can be used as a soil amendment or mulch. A good potting mix can be made with 1/4 part compost, 1/4 part perlite, 1/4 part peat, and 1/4 part builder’s sand.

To learn more about building and caring for your worm bin, attend a Compost Happens workshop. Pre-registration is required.
