Residential Horticulture
The UF/IFAS Extension Residential Horticulture program in Manatee County is your go-to resource for all things gardening and landscaping. We provide research-based information to help you create beautiful, thriving gardens and landscapes using sustainable, environmentally friendly, and resource-efficient solutions. Within Residential Horticulture, you can explore volunteer opportunities with the Master Gardener Volunteer program, learn about water-saving and environmentally friendly practices through the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program, and connect with your neighbors through our Community Gardens program.
Master Gardner Volunteer Program
The MGV program cultivates a dedicated network of trained horticulture volunteers who are passionate about sharing research-based gardening knowledge with the community. These skilled volunteers undergo extensive training from UF/IFAS Extension and then serve the public by answering plant questions, assisting with plant diagnostic clinics, supporting community and school gardens, and delivering educational workshops.
Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program in Manatee County empowers residents to create beautiful and healthy landscapes that are perfectly suited to our unique Florida environment. Based on nine core principles, we provide research-based guidance on topics like choosing the "right plant, right place," watering efficiently, reducing stormwater runoff, attracting wildlife, and managing pests responsibly.
Community Gardens Program
The Community Gardens Program in Manatee County manages the county's public gardens where residents can come together to cultivate their own food, share knowledge, and build stronger communities. Emphasizing education and sustainable practices, we provide support, resources, and hands-on workshops on planting seasons, cultivation techniques, and more.
