Who We Are
We are glad you are visiting our website and hope that you find the information useful and up-to-date. Broward County Extension brings informative resources and knowledge of the University of Florida faculty and staff directly to you through our Extension programs. Here in Broward County, we have helped millions of people over the years apply research-based solutions to their homes, businesses, and communities.
UF/IFAS Extension provides educational outreach to local citizens. Broward County has a population of more than 1.9 million people. It is the second most populous county in the state of Florida and the 18th most populous county in the United States. Many Broward residents are part-time winter residents and enjoy the sub-tropical climate and ocean access. Since 1939, there has been an active Extension program in South Florida educating the community. Extension’s work of providing core services to the county’s resident’s remains as relevant and necessary as it was back then.
The Cooperative Extension Service is nationwide and was established by the Smith-Lever Act of 1914. It is a partnership between state land grant universities, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the county governments throughout the nation. All of these groups share in the planning, financing, and operation of extension programs. In Florida, the Cooperative Extension Service is administered by the University of Florida.
