Projects and Events

Once youth join 4-H through a club, program, or camp, they can explore different project areas based on their interests. These projects offer hands-on, real-world experiences and help build skills, confidence, and leadership.

4-H youth projects are supported by volunteers and staff who guide them as they learn, try new things, and grow. Projects also provide an opportunity to showcase their work at different events and through competitions.

Why 4-H Matters

4-H youth are:

  • 2x more likely to feel good about their wellbeing
  • 3x more likely to feel confident in their skills
  • 2x more likely to make healthy choices
  • 2x more likely to take part in science programs outside school
  • 4x more likely to give back to their communities
  • 4-H Projects

Youth take part in projects based on their interests, or what “sparks” their interest. There are more than 50 project areas to choose from.

A project might include raising an animal for the county fair, building rockets, or learning how to grow food. Some clubs focus on one project area, while others offer many options for youth to explore.

Project learning may stay at the club level or grow into larger experiences. Orange County 4-H members often take part in the Central Florida Fair and the County 4-H Showcase. Some youth also compete at regional and state contests in areas like livestock, horses, dogs, and robotics.

Teens who are interested in leadership and civic engagement can take part in state 4-H events, often held during the summer.

All members are encouraged to complete a 4-H project report for the project area(s) they choose each year. The 4-H office can provide samples and help youth get started.

Families can find materials through Shop 4-H Curriculum or explore options through Florida 4-H Projects. For help, contact the 4-H office.

There are many opportunities for youth and families to take part in events beyond their community club. Youth can also take part in workshops and events at the county, multi-county, and state levels based on their project area and age.
